Deep South Foodie Recommendations

The Deep South is not only rich in culture and friendly people, but its food has some of the best dishes in the world.

Here is my short list of foodie recommendations.

Nashville, Tennessee

First up, coffee.

We stumbled upon this place while wandering the streets of Nashville early in the morning.

The original brick walls and quirky artworks made Frothy Monkey a beautiful space to sit and sip on a coffee out of the city chaos. Try one of their seasonal drinks or go with their signature coffee drink, the Golden Monkey Latte, which has a special turmeric blend twist.

Bonus: It is one of the first coffee places to open early, which means 7 am for the US...

A short drive from the city centre, Olive & Sinclare Chocolate Co. is here to fix all your chocolate and caramel cravings.

Taste your way through their unique process of making bean-to-bar chocolate on a Saturday factory tour.

When travelling, I always enjoy exploring the food aisles in different countries.

America especially has some weird and wonderful things!

The Whole Foods Market on Broadway was one of the grocery store highlights.

We collected some natural nuts, muesli bars and fruit for road trip snacks, then got fresh peaches, yoghurt and muesli for a balanced breakfast to fuel us up for a big day of boot shopping and hopping from one country music bar to the next.

Memphis, Tennessee

You simply cannot visit Memphis without having BBQ.

Central BBQ is open daily from 11 am to 9 pm and offers a range of meat dishes, including BBQ nachos, pulled pork sandwiches, and brisket platters.

New Orleans, Louisiana

If you are walking around the French Quarter, you’ll be sure to find one of the fantastic Cafe Beignets.

Your order: The official doughnut of New Orleans, Beignets. Served fresh and hot with a crispy outside and soft, sweet centre, topped with powdered sugar.

Best paired with a cup of café au lait (coffee with milk).

Be welcomed to true Southern hospitality and a flavoursome feast at HIEUX Boil Seafood House.

Get your gloves and bib ready for some messy (delicious) eating.

Unpopular opinion, but the corn cobs were next-level delicious.

FYI - Yes, I am a typical white girl, but the others also agreed that even the mildest Cajun flavour still had a zing to it!

Austin, Texas

If you’re needing to top up on your whole foods, then CAVA in the city centre is a great place to create your own fresh Mediterranean salad bowl, with customizable greens & grains bowls, pitas & salad.

Fort Worth, Texas

If burgers (and goats) are your calling, then Rodeo Goat is where you’ve go(a)t to go. Take in their fun, true-to-name decor, then pick from their list of creative burger and salad options. Please note, the only goat you’ll find on the menu is their cheese.

My order? The Neil Young.

Chillicothe, Texas

Pronouced puh·kaan, not pee·kan.

Apparently, we Australians butcher the word…

Highly recommended from a local Texan that we met along the way, this little family-run business is a must for those travelling between Fort Worth to Amarillo.

I had to try their famous Pecan Pie, which did not disappoint.

The Peanut Butter Pie - Also a highlight.

Not only does this store provide many delicious delicacies, but it also has many quirky gifts that make for great presents or keepsakes.

Eating to feel good while travelling can be difficult, but it is possible (even in America!)

Balance the traditional dishes and sweet bakery snacks with filling, whole foods to keep your gut, brain and energy levels up for busy tourist activities.
